Recently, I chatted with Gemini Syndrome\u2019s front man, Aaron Nordstrom. We discussed the details on the band\u2019s impending sophomore album, lineup changes, and more. Gemini Syndrome released their single, \u201cEternity,\u201d on August 14th and is currently on a headlining tour before heading back to the studio.<\/p>\n

New England Music Blog<\/strong>: Is there an official title for the second album?
\nAaron Nordstrom<\/strong>: It\u2019s not official, I think we\u2019re going to call it Memento Mori, which means \u201cremember we die.\u201d<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: Of the three new songs you\u2019re playing live, which one is your favorite?
\nAN<\/strong>: I like playing them all but I guess I would have to say \u201cEternity,\u201d because it\u2019s the one the people know. It\u2019s getting the best reaction from the people because they\u2019re familiar with it but we\u2019ve had a really good response to all the new stuff we\u2019ve been playing, so it\u2019s all been kind of fun. I have noticed, you know, people are also looking up videos or whatever but people are starting to learn words to the stuff that\u2019s not released yet so it\u2019s been pretty cool, seeing people sing along to that stuff.<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: In order to graduate from the ducks, what would you suggest?
\nAN<\/strong>: Oh my god, I have no idea\u2026 I know there is a movement of people trying to figure out what to do next but I have no idea. I have so many ducks and they\u2019re still coming in. It\u2019s out of control! I just got a bondage duck\u2026 it\u2019s like the same little rubber ducky with the spiked collar and a ball gag. It\u2019s got a compartment for a battery, I don\u2019t know what that\u2019s for\u2026just sayin\u2019, I own it now, it\u2019s mine.<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: How is it with the new members?
\nAN<\/strong>: It\u2019s good, it\u2019s different\u2026 it\u2019s to be expected, you know? But I mean, we regrouped and we\u2019re moving forward. Still Gemini Syndrome and the core of it is still there and the purpose of it is still there so we go out there and do our job.<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: Of the planned trilogy, do you have a favorite topic? Like Lux was about birth, the second is about life, etc.
\nAN<\/strong>: Yeah and in the title Memento Mori, it\u2019s Latin for\u2026 basically meaning like remember that you have stuff, virtually like carpe diem, \u201cseize the day,\u201d and know that you\u2019re here for a limited amount of time\u2026 know that you\u2019re gonna check out eventually. It\u2019s been on my head a lot in the past year or two and\u2026 just getting older and knowing that my mortality is imminent, I\u2019m gonna die\u2026 someday. It\u2019ll happen, I don\u2019t know when and I really don\u2019t see that as a morbid thought, I don\u2019t think I have really feared death but the more I get older, it\u2019s like just realizing it\u2019s gonna happen and I don\u2019t know how conscious I was of that in my youth even though I was aware like I knew I was gonna die, it\u2019s a scientific fact but the actual reality\u2026 maybe I think about this more than I should but the reality that that moment is gonna come and I\u2019ll be like \u201cthis is it\u2026 my time\u2019s up.\u201d It\u2019s really been on my head a lot and we wrote a record about it, using your time wisely and just not taking it for granted because it could be over at any point\u2026 at least the third record will be about\u2026 whatever capacity I will be able to write about it\u2026 about death and whatever comes after that. Or maybe it\u2019ll be more of a reflection on me, on the past experience, you know? As the clock ticks down\u2026 we\u2019ll get there when we get there. That\u2019s the general outline\u2026<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: Who was your main musical influence growing up?
\nAN<\/strong>: It\u2019s all over the board, man\u2026 growing up playing classical and jazz piano, that was the earliest of my influences, learning that stuff as a kid. I listen to everything, I listen to everything from rock to death metal to folk to EDM to rap to hip\/hop\u2026 it\u2019s all over the board, I mean it just depends on the time of my life that you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: Synners want to know, will you be at ShipRocked 2016?
\nAN<\/strong>: No, we will be in the studio recording. Hopefully finishing the record. We\u2019re scheduled to go in November and start\u2026 or should I say continue\u2026 working on it and that process will take a couple of months. A lot of people seem to want us back on the boat, we would\u2019ve done it if schedules would\u2019ve been ok for that but we got to get the record done, priorities so\u2026<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: A lot of us feel like we\u2019re different, how did you manage to turn your difference to becoming the amazing person you are?
\nAN<\/strong>: At the end of the day, it kind of goes back to the Memento Mori principle, man, it\u2019s like this is your life, this is what you got, it\u2019s the only one you have and whether\u2026 I said this to a guy a couple of weeks ago\u2026it\u2019s like I don\u2019t care if you believe in heaven and hell or if you believe in the afterlife, any kind of reincarnation, if you believe that if you die and that\u2019s it\u2026 I don\u2019t care what it is\u2026 the reality is the only thing you know for sure is that you\u2019re alive in the skin that you\u2019re in right now\u2026and wrapping my head around it, again as I get a little older, as I gone through whatever crap and shit I\u2019ve gone through in my life, like this is my shit-box, you know what I mean? Hey, it might be a shit-box but it\u2019s mine and it\u2019s the only one I know. So I guess at the end of the day with whatever differences I have and whatever obstacles I\u2019ve had to overcome it\u2019s like those are my obstacles and it\u2019s not like I can change it. I can\u2019t wish it away\u2026 I wish I could\u2026 I wish it was that easy to wish it away but it\u2019s not\u2026 the fact is that\u2019s what you got. Either try to make the best of it, try to keep your head above water or give up and don\u2019t try\u2026 but that\u2019s really the choice you have to make. It\u2019s not an easy one, but it would be so easy to give up. Again, going back to the idea that this is the only life you\u2019ve got, if you give up, what are you going to go to? It\u2019s not like you can exchange it for another movie that\u2019s better. It\u2019s not Redbox. It\u2019s not like, \u201coh I don\u2019t like this film… I\u2019ll just return it\u2026 \u201d Things don\u2019t work that way\u2026 if you got The Godfather trilogy and that\u2019s what you\u2019re watching\u2026 if you got Happy Feet, that\u2019s what you\u2019re watching, you know what I mean? Like that\u2019s your movie, you\u2019ve got to deal with what you\u2019ve got\u2026 I don\u2019t know why I picked The Godfather and Happy Feet, that\u2019s fucking weird\u2026 trying to find an opposite spectrum but you know, that\u2019s the principle\u2026 it\u2019s your life. It\u2019s nobody else\u2019s and you\u2019re not gonna live in anybody else\u2019s. Hopefully, when all is said and done, it matters.<\/p>\n

NEMB<\/strong>: Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
\nAN<\/strong>: [laughs] I have no idea\u2026 20 years\u2026 you know to be completely honest, I think it\u2019s a miracle and I surprise myself on a daily basis that I\u2019m still alive now. And I\u2019m not saying I\u2019m expecting to die anytime soon but to say that I\u2019ll be here in 20 years, let alone, tell you where I\u2019m going to be, is absolutely impossible. Maybe, a nice house somewhere in the Hamptons\u2026 [laughs]\u2026 I don\u2019t know\u2026 somehow I doubt that but you know, it\u2019s impossible, I couldn\u2019t tell you. Ideally, I\u2019d have a successfully music career, still be able to do this and live comfortably and happily. But the zombie apocalypse might come before that so maybe I\u2019ll be running around and shooting zombies with an AK. Who knows? I\u2019m going off blowing heads off\u2026 dreadlocks flying in the wind. I\u2019ll probably dress like a ninja too because it\u2019s the end of the world, who cares about fashion?
