Twenty One Pilots at TD Garden – September 20, 2024

Creating an interactive space during an arena tour is one thing, but making the most of that space while also taking time to connect with fans is another thing entirely. Twenty One Pilots has consistently shown up for their fans, delivering unforgettable performances since day one. Their current ‘Clancy World Tour’ is no exception, offering everything a hardcore fan could hope for—and more. This time, we were lucky to welcome both Twenty One Pilots and Balu Brigada back to our city for a multi-day stay. Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun took the stage together, just the two of them, holding it down with their signature energy. Here’s a look at what went down and what you might experience at your stop on the tour.

Balu Brigada

If you’re into dark indie pop and love bands like The Neighbourhood, Phoenix, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Balu Brigada is right up your alley. As the sole opener for Twenty One Pilots on their current tour, Balu Brigada embraced their relatively new status in the music scene but didn’t let it hold them back.  Formed in 2016, brothers Pierre and Harry Beasley spent years writing and producing before they were old enough to perform in clubs and bars full-time. After signing with Warner Music Australia and Atlantic Records, the duo now works in the U.S. to fully pursue their musical careers. On stage, they already had a connection with the audience, thanks in part to Twenty One Pilots’ support on social media. Fans mouthed along to the lyrics, cheering louder with every note. Despite minimal stage setup, the band’s excitement was noticeable as they expressed just how much this tour meant to them. Decked out in Red Sox gear, they matched Boston’s infectious energy, making their performance all the more special.

Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots have consistently proven they give their all at every show. Whether it’s Josh’s explosive drumming or Tyler’s relentless energy as he moves across the stage, there’s never a dull moment. This tour celebrates their latest release, Clancy, which dropped in May, but despite the focus on newer material, they included a solid mix of fan-favorite classics. The transitions to Stage B, featuring acoustic renditions of ‘Addict With a Pen’ and ‘Forest,’ sent fans into a frenzy, thrilled to hear those deep cuts live.

One standout moment during the Stage B set was Josh’s surprise appearance in the crowd, wielding fire—an electrifying callback to their Trench era. One standout moment during the Stage B set was Josh’s surprise appearance in the crowd, wielding fire—an electrifying callback to their Trench era. Each segment, from the intimate Stage B performances to the high-energy acts on the main stage, flowed seamlessly, creating a cohesive experience that kept the audience fully engaged.

During ‘My Blood,’ Tyler knelt, taking in the magnitude of the moment. Fans cheered as they noticed him smiling and holding his hands over his face. Directly after, Josh’s Boston jersey was a subtle nod to the city’s pride, making the performance feel personal and intentional. If there’s one thing Twenty One Pilots excel at, it’s staying true to their fans, their roots, and themselves. The night ended with the traditional performance of ‘Trees,’ showered in confetti, as fans celebrated yet another unforgettable finale.

In conclusion, much like Twenty One Pilots themselves, our expectations for their music and performances are always surpassed by the creativity and humor they bring to the table. Whether it’s Tyler’s legendary quip about “saving battery but not for Mulberry Street” or Josh’s unforgettable “is this a concert or a therapy session” moments in interviews, they remind us that not only can they deliver unforgettable tunes, but they can also leave a feeling of nostalgia long after the last note has faded. With every album and tour, they continue to surprise us, proving that when it comes to pushing boundaries, they’re not just raising the bar—they are consistently redefining it.
