In Between Days Festival in Quincy, MA – August 19 & 20, 2023
When Boston indie act Dutch Tulips asked the crowd who’d traveled the furthest to In Between Days, a man stepped forward to proclaim he’d come from Texas. What compelled him to cross at least 1,500 miles to Quincy, Massachusetts? “Just good music.”
A more intimate Boston Calling meets Newport Folk Festival, In Between Days struck the perfect balance of manic alternative, gritty Americana, and glossy indie pop in their second year at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Between guitar solos, festival-goers could venture inside the arcade and shop among a handful of vintage vendors.
Headliners Modest Mouse and Lord Huron may have drawn the biggest crowds — let’s face it, it’s impossible to match Isaac Brock’s frenzied energy — but every act on the bill brought something to the table. Local favorites Mint Green, Shallow Pools, and Weakened Friends especially made Massachusetts proud. Kat Wright powered through a lost voice to deliver an engaging set with assistance from guitarist, Bob Wagner. The Beths and Phantogram were perfect for the golden hour slots with two sides of summer: dreamy vocals for when the temperature cools and reverberating backbones of drum and bass to get us through the dog days . Trampled by Turtles, Blitzen Trapper, and Fantastic Cat rounded the lineup out with their unique blends of rock, folk, and bluegrass.
We can’t wait to see what the In Between Days folks have planned for the South Shore next year. Count us in for 2024! Look at our summary gallery of each day below, or click here for detailed slideshows of each band on day 1, or here for slideshows from day 2!
