Rob Thomas is touring in support of his upcoming album, The Great Unknown. Joining him on this tour is the Plain White T’s and Vinyl Station.

Vinyl Station

Phoenix based indie rock band Vinyl Station, one of Rob Thomas’ personal favorites, is touring in support of their newly released album, Still Open Eyes.

Plain White T’s

Plain White T’s are providing direct support on the tour, play a short ten-song set. Half of their set consisted of material off their latest album, American Nights. Their three platinum selling hits, “Hey There Delilah,” “The Rhythm of Love” and “1,2,3,4” were all of course played as well.

Rob Thomas

With his third solo album only days away from release, Rob Thomas was in top form tonight. His set consisted almost entirely of solo material; the only Matchbox Twenty song in the set was a slowed down version of “3 A.M.” The band also played a great cover of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and then just Rob with an acoustic guitar sang Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.”

Rob and his seven-piece band sounded great as they tore through a two-hour long set. My only complaint, and this is for my personal tastes, is that they never rocked as hard as I could tell they could. While most of his solo material is more poppy than Matchbox Twenty, even the songs that were recorded more rock were played more subdued. While his lead guitar player is great, when they played “Smooth,” the hit song Rob recorded with Santana, I was very disappointed by the lack of a lot of Carlos’ signature licks from the song. The song still sounded great, it was just missing the magic of the original. That said though, their performance was great, and the crowd – which if not sold out, was very near capacity – loved every minute of it.
