Russell Dickerson
Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun
Uncasville, CT
June 1, 2018
I’ve never seen an opening act perform at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun. It’s generally one act plays a 90 minute set, and then you move on to the nearest slot machine.
When they announced Abby Anderson, I was taken by surprise. A excited 20 something year old appeared on stage, bubbly and excited to perform. Abby sang some contemporary country songs from the heart, gushing with information on the ins and outs on why she wrote the songs she did. I feel like I may know to much about her from the short set she played, for instance her parents are divorced and she’s got a bunch of brothers, and sometimes love sucks. She ended her set with “Make Him Wait,” her debut single, and announced that she was joining Bret Eldredge. Keep your eyes on this one!
After Abby, I wasn’t sure what to expect when Russell popped out on stage. A pop country singer, with a backing band. When you say country, I think cowboy hat and sad songs on a lonesome stage.
Russell was anything but! His songs were upbeat and he himself was a show stopping entertainer. He sang about making a little money and making love, with the appropriate hand and body gestures to go along with it. The Wolf Den reached maximum capacity, with girls begging the bouncer to get in. No wonder he’s heading out on tour this summer with Lady Antebellum and Darius Rucker!
