Amon Amarth in Hartford, CT – October 15, 2014

Amon Amarth continues their tour in support of 2013’s Deceiver of the Gods. Joining them on this leg of the tour is again Skeletonwitch in the opening position, with Sabaton as direct support.

Skeletonwitch

Ohio thrash metal band Skeletonwitch is touring in support of 2013’s Serpents Unleashed. They had a very tight space at the front of the stage to play, but that didn’t stop them from shredding through a short, but powerful set.

Sabaton

I was unfamiliar with Sabaton tonight. For no reason in particular, I expected them to be in the same vein as Skeletonwitch. Once all of Skeletonwitch’s gear had been removed from the stage, Sabaton came roaring out with so much energy that I was caught a little off guard. Much closer to the power metal stylings of bands like Dragonforce, though with less operatic singing, Sabaton was an extremely fun band to see live!

Amon Amarth

The Guardians of Asgaard return to the US for the second time in 2014. Their setlist is mostly unchanged from the first leg of the tour, save for a few substitutions. It was an extremely powerful performance, and the crowd loved every minute of it.. From the opening song, the title track of the new album, through what singer Johan Hegg referred to as the greatest party song they’ve ever written, “Guardians of Asgaard,” and onward to the incredible encore of “Twilight of the Thunder God” and “The Pursuit of Vikings,” complete with a death metal sing along that’s not to be missed. These guys are better every time I see them!
