The Priest is back! Celebrating over 40 years of Judas Priest heavy metal, and touring in support of their new album, Firepower, Rob Halford and company have returned to Mohegan Sun.
Once the curtain drops, Priest kicks into the title track of the new album, and we are off to the races. The new songs they played tonight, “Firepower,” “Lightning Strike” and “Evil Never Dies,” fit into their set seamlessly. The band sounds strong as ever. Somehow 66-year-old Rob Halford’s voice sounds better every time they come around.
One noticeable thing missing from the stage was founding guitarist Glenn Tipton. About a month before the tour began, it was announced he has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, and would have to sit the tour out. Producer Andy Sneap is filling his shoes for the tour, and did a great job of it.
We heard new songs, we heard hits like “Breaking the Law,” “Living After Midnight” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” and then we heard some great deep cuts too. Songs like “Some Heads are Gonna Roll” and “Sinner” were some real highlights of the show.
As we got towards the end of the set, Halford rode out on his motorcycle, in true Judas Priest fashion, and sang “Painkiller.” At the end of the song, the band left the stage, leaving everybody calling out for an encore. Then, without announcement, a single spotlight hit the stage, and out walked Glenn Tipton! It was very moving to have him rejoin the band for the final three songs of the set.
