This fall, Five Finger Death Punch and Volbeat hit the road on a co-headlining tour. Our coverage on those bands is coming soon, but they also brought a couple of support acts on the road with them!

Nothing More

I had never heard of Nothing More before this tour, and as an opening band, I had low expectations. When they first hit the stage, I was surprised at how not-terrible they were. I guess I’ve just seen a lot of really terrible opening acts before. That said, while not terrible, at first they weren’t anything that was jumping out at me as amazing.

Nothing More’s Multi-Member Bass Solo

After their second song, bass player Daniel Oliver took off his bass, and mounted it to a rig in the center of the stage. As it stood there, he then started a two finger tapping solo. Eventually guitar player Mark Vollelunga joined him, tapping on other strings, and occasionally running a slide up the neck. This carried on for a couple of minutes before lead singer Jonny Hawkins came over and started banging on the strings with drum sticks. It made for a very cool performance!

Towards the end of the set, drummer Paul O’Brien performed a drum solo, while the remaining three members banged on miscellaneous floor toms around the stage. I’m a big fan of synchronized drumming, so that was pretty cool too!

It’s obviously tough for opening acts to stand out in people’s memories, but they certainly made an impact! I had a chance to talk to them a couple days later, and Mark told me that they make a conscious effort to not just be musicians, but also performers of a show. This effort certainly was not lost on me!

Heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah just released their fourth album, Blood For Blood. Earlier this year, it was announced that bass player Bobzilla and guitar player Greg Tribett would be leaving the band. This is my first time seeing them with new bass player Kyle Sanders and touring guitar player Christian Brady. Both members mesh well with the band, who put on a powerful show to a very receptive crowd.
