Saint Asonia in Boston – February 25, 2023

On Saturday night, the Rock Resurrection tour came to Roadrunner in Boston. This co-headlining show of Skillet and Theory of a Deadman starts off with one more great band, Saint Asonia.

If you’re not familiar with the band Saint Asonia, you’re at least familiar with their members. Frontman Adam Gontier was the original frontman of Three Days Grace from their inception in 1997, until his departure in 2013. Also in the band, on guitar, is Staind guitarist Mike Mushok. Unfortunately, before this tour started off, they announced Mike wasn’t going to be able to perform on it, though rest assured, he is still the guitar player for the band. In his place on this tour is their friend Tavis Stanley, from Art of Dying and Adelitas Way. Rounding out the band is Adam’s cousin Cale Gontier on bass, and Cody Watkins on drums.

Saint Asonia just released a new album, Introvert/Extrovert, which was previously released as two EP’s. We had a chance to talk with Adam shortly after the release of Introvert last summer, so be sure to check that out here, if you haven’t already.

Their 8 song set featured a little piece of all aspects of Adam’s career. The show started and ended with tracks off Saint Asonia’s self-titled debut, as well as a track a piece off of Flawed Design, Introvert, and Extrovert. In the middle we got a pair of Three Days Grace songs, first with “Never Too Late,” the majority of which was performed solo by Adam, with the crowd singing along. After Three Days Grace’s mega-hit debut song, “I Hate Everything About You,” they performed a cello-less version of the Apocalyptica song “I Don’t Care,” on which Adam made a guest appearance. This different arrangement was definitely a lot of fun to hear.

The band had a great energy, and sounded great. While it was great to hear the Three Days Grace songs the way they should be heard, the only thing disappointing in their set was that we didn’t get to hear more Saint Asonia songs. Hopefully before too long, Saint Asonia will come around on a headlining tour, and we’ll get a full night of their music!
