In This Moment are touring in support of their latest album, 2014’s Black Widow. Supporting them on this run are deathcore band Upon a Burning Body, as well as two more female fronted bands, Butcher Babies and The Nearly Deads, showing that heavy metal is not just a man’s world.

The Nearly Deads

The Nearly Deads

The Nearly Deads singer Theresa Jeane

Coming from Nashville, alternative/punk band The Nearly Deads are supporting their debut album, Invisible Tonight.

I often expect the unknown opening band on a lineup like this to be terrible, with terrible vocals. I was impressed by how well singer Theresa Jeane was singing. Though their music was a little too poppy for my tastes, they certainly held their own tonight.

Butcher Babies

Butcher Babies

Butcher Babies singer Carla Harvey

When I last saw the Butcher Babies, they were supporting their days-old debut album, Goliath, playing a slot on 2013’s Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival’s second stage. Since then, they’ve released a five-song EP, Uncovered, and are hard at work on their sophomore album. Not knowing the order of the bands ahead of time, I was surprised when they came on second, and not as direct support. Butcher Babies put on a tight performance, and their dedicated fan base loved them. Singers Heidi Shepherd and Carla Harvey compliment each other well, and really know how to command a crowd.

At one point in the show, they challenged the crowed to have as many people as possible crowd-surf to the front and give them high-fives. The crowd willingly abided, and dozens of fans surfed their way to the front.

Upon a Burning Body

Upon a Body Burning

Upon a Burning Body singer Danny Leal

Texas deathcore band Upon a Burning Body put on an aggressive and energetic show. Some of the more interesting moments were “Texas Blood Money,” which includes the classic line from “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” “The stars at night are big and bright…” as well as their cover of DJ Snake & Lil Jon’s “Turn Down For What,” which includes a performance from Ice-T, whose vocals were piped in while they played along.

I will admit that before tonight, I knew In This Moment were a theatrical band, but other than that, I was unfamiliar with them. Theatrically, they lived up to what I had expected. Costume changes, dancers, stage props… They put on a well-oiled performance, for sure.

Musically, I really enjoyed what I heard. Singer Maria Brink is backed up by a very talented band of musicians. Their songs are catchy, and have been stuck with me in the days since the show!
