Judas Priest is wrapping up a short fall tour, with opening support coming from Mastodon. The tour isn’t hitting all the major cities they played last fall, and instead of playing in New England or even New York City, they decided to play on Long Island. With the closing of the Nassau Coliseum this summer, there’s no large indoor venues for them to play on Long Island. That brought them instead to The Paramount, a 1,500 capacity venue which they sold out two nights in a row.

Mastodon

Mastodon was certainly a surprise pick to open for Judas Priest. They’re a band that I feel can, and probably has headlined their own shows at The Paramount. Their unique sludge metal sound seems like an odd paring with the classic metal sound of Priest. Mastodon sounded great, and while they certainly did have fans in there, some of the older Judas Priest fans did not “get” them.

Judas Priest

Thursday night in Long Island and the Priest is back! Bringing you more than 40 years of Judas Priest heavy metal!

As they wrap up the Redeemer of Souls album cycle, the setlist tonight is not that unlike what we saw on the tour last fall. The band is firing on all cylinders though, and the three songs played off the new album, “Dragonaut,” “Halls of Valhalla” as well as the title track all fit seamlessly with the rest of the tunes.

A highlight to me was the return of “Electric Eye” to the setlist, which they started their first encore with… Always a killer way to get the crowd going!

There was mishap during the guitar solo of “Hell Bent for Leather.” As guitarist Glenn Tipton started his solo, there was a lot of feedback, and everybody looked around to figure out what was going on. Singer Rob Halford was not going to let this derail the show, and he quickly found the beat and yelled “1-2-3-4!” to get everybody back on track. Glenn switched guitars before finishing the solo, so my best guess is he broke a string. Besides this, they put on a flawless performance.

This show was a really special night, as it’s not often you get to see the metal gods play such an intimate venue.
