Israeli trance band Infected Mushroom stopped in Boston in support of their 2015 albums Converting Vegetarians II and Friends on Mushrooms. They were joined at the show by 12th Planet and Randy Seidman.

Randy Seidman

Randy Siedman is an electronic dance music DJ based out of Los Angeles. Randy has been the top support act picked by Infected Mushroom, having played over 300 shows with them. Randy had the task of playing as the room was slowly filling up. He seemed to be more reserved at the start of the set, but as his show went on, and people started to pay attention and get really into it, Randy appeared to get more into it himself. As the crowd was still smaller, they had lots of room to dance. Several people were dancing with glow sticks and various forms of spinning lights. People surrounded them as they mesmerized each other with the motion of the lights while Randy was playing beats. By the time he was finished, he had the crowd pumped up and ready to go for the rest of the night.

12th Planet

12th Planet, the stage name of dubstep DJ John Dadzie, took the stage immediately after Seidman. Known to some as the American dubstep king, 12th Planet was one of the first acts to bring dubstep to America. He was really into his music, and was very entertaining to watch. Just as with Seidman’s set, the more 12th Planet got into his show, the more the crowd got into it. The crowd was singing along with him, and when he dropped the beats, the response was huge. As he played a new song that he had just finished, you could tell he was very proud of his music.

Infected Mushroom

After a quick break, Infected Mushroom hit the stage. The band consists of producing masterminds Amit Duvdevani on vocals and Erez Eisen on keyboards and other electrical aspects of the show, along with touring members Tommy Cunningham on guitar and Rogerio Jardim on drums.

As the curtains were drawn, immediately your eyes are drawn to the large mushroom shaped piece at the back of the stage. Appearing to be made of scrap metal, this mushroom had tentacles and more than a few mouths. At either end of the stage were smaller mushrooms that occasionally rose from the ground, shot smoke out from them, and receded into the ground again.

Though still an electronic music show, I thought their show was an entirely different level of entertainment, due to the fact that they have instruments being played, not just samples. Duvdevani often held a drumstick in his hand, and would wave it back and forth in a tick-tock motion while working the crowd. As the energy builded on stage, the crowd responded with more energy back at the band, forming a very powerful symbiosis.

Nearly half the set consisted of material from their two albums released in 2015, with two tracks off Converting Vegetarians II and more than a half dozen off of Friends on Mushrooms. They also played a cover of “Sabatoge” by the Beastie Boys.

The performance they put on just goes to show why Infected Mushroom has been one of the worlds biggest selling electronic bands for twenty years.
