Sammy Hagar and the Circle

The Red Rocker himself, Sammy Hagar, is out with his new project, The Circle. Joining him on tour are 90’s rockers Collective Soul, and his son Andrew Hagar.

Andrew Hagar AKA Drew Hagus

Sammy’s son Andrew kicked off the night performing solo with an acoustic guitar, and occasional harmonica.

Collective Soul

When I think of Collective Soul, I think of the 1990’s. I regularly hear their big hit, “Shine,” on radio, and to me, I thought they were a one-hit-wonder. Tonight, I could not believe how many of their songs I knew, and just how many hits they actually had.

The band is currently working on their tenth studio album, due for a tentative release in spring 2018. Not bad for a one hit wonder! The band sounded exactly the way you remember them. If you were a fan then, you’ll enjoy their show now!

Sammy Hagar and the Circle

Sammy Hagar has had a lot of hits, with a lot of bands. His newest project, The Circle, was to allow him to not be pigeon-holed to one bands’ catalog, but to play songs spanning his entire career. Joining him in the band are drummer Jason Bonham, son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, bassist Michael Anthony, who’s previously performed with Sammy in Van Halen and Chickenfoot, and Vic Johnson on guitar, known for playing with Sammy in the Waboritos.

Kicking off with Sammy’s classic, “There’s Only One Way to Rock,” you know it’s going to be a good night. In addition to all the projects Sammy has been involved in, Bonham brings some Zeppelin to the table, and they played some of their great songs like “Good Times, Bad Times” and “Rock and Roll.”

Vic Johnson is a guitar player who has his work cut out for him. The songs they played tonight originally had guitar tracks played by guitar players who were no joke… Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Joe Satriani, Ronnie Montrose… Not a short order to live up to, but he kicked ass.

As always, Michael Anthony was holding down a groove, while giving the powerful backup vocals he’s known for.

A little treat towards the end was when former Sammy and Boston guitar player Gary Pihl came out to join in on “Heavy Metal.”

Sammy Hagar and the Circle put on such a great show, and I will not miss them if they come around again!
