Rob Zombie tore through Mohegan Sun on The Super Monster Sex Action Tour, while preparing for the release of a new album, later this year.

Seven or eight years ago, I had begun writing Rob Zombie off as a live performer. A couple of shows I had seen, as well as 2007’s Zombie Live live album, had me really disappointed. He had lost a lot of the magic from shows I had seen prior to that time.

Over the last two years, Zombie has been on fire, and has really won me back. The previous two shows we have covered, Mayhem Fest in 2013 and a headlining show in 2014, have been really good, but this show was easily the best Rob Zombie show I’ve seen in well over ten years!

Zombie and the rest of the band, guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D and drummer Ginger Fish, were tight, and put on a no-frills, solid performance.

My one criticism, is that over the last few years, Zombie’s set has not changed drastically. Some of the placement of the songs in the set have moved around, but with the exception of White Zombie’s “Super-Charger Heaven,” and a cover of the Ramones “Blitzkrieg Bop,” the rest of the songs have been played in New England in the last two years. Don’t get me wrong, they’re all great songs, but Rob Zombie has a much deeper catalog he can pull from to switch things up. They had started teasing “Thunder Kiss ’65,” before Zombie told the crowd he was sick of playing this song, and instead they played the previously mentioned Ramones cover. I was impressed that he had decided to pull the song from the set! However as soon as they finished “Blitzkrieg Bop,” they went ahead and played “Thunder Kiss ’65” anyway. Ah well.

Despite the lack of change in the set, this was a really impressive performance, and I definitely plan to check out Zombie and co. the next time they come around!
