The Return of the Dreads tour with Korn, Rob Zombie and In This Moment – August 28, 2016

Return of the Dreads had a co-headlining duo up of Korn and Rob Zombie, and of our favorites, In This Moment, for support.  Incase you are wondering; Yes! Every band had someone with dreads!

In This Moment

This wasn’t our first In This Moment Show, and it certainly won’t be the last.  This heavy metal band was formed in 2005 by Maria Brink and Chris Howorth. Though there has been some member turn around, the line-up they have now is amazing.  Maria and Chris are still in the band, and Travis Johnson, Randy Weitzel and Kent Diimmel, round out the rest of it.

Although their music is heavy, and Maria does her fair share of screaming, she also sounds (and looks) beautiful.  Each song during their performance is a production.  There are costume changes, props and back up dancers. When one song ends, she disappears into a tent right behind her small stage, and returns with something new on.

They were the opener, so they were only able to play a few songs, but they made great decisions on what to play.  From “Adrenalize” to “Whore”, and everything in the middle of the alphabet they were right on cue. The fans near me were disappointed they didn’t play anything from their older albums, but beggars can’t be choosers.  Just as we thought the set was done, we realized they hadn’t played “Blood” yet. Almost immediately, Maria appeared back on stage, in a new outfit and started calling for Blood.  This band, and Maria, never lets you down!

Rob Zombie

Our bar was set really high for Rob Zombie.  We had seen him at Mohegan Sun about a year earlier and were blown away with his performance.  Would he be able to top this?

Yes, yes he would.

Rob Zombie has been entertaining metal heads since the 80’s, and hasn’t lost momentum. He founded White Zombie, wrote and directed a few movies and produced a few movies as well. Everything he does, he pours his soul into, twisted as it may be!

The first thing that floored us was his stage set up.  The last show had almost nothing, this set up had everything.  A giant boombox, monster heads, and screens everywhere. During the performance different videos played during different songs, also a preview for his next movie appeared.  While Rob sang and danced around, a giant devil and giant robot came out to help entertain as well.

Then there were racing aliens (don’t ask) and some huge balloons that the crowd was hitting from person to person.

There was so much going on, I have almost forgot to mention that he sang and the band played music.  The big hits were played, such as “Superbeast” and “Dragula”, and new songs were worked into the set, no one missing a beat. We loved when he played the cover song “We’re an American Band”. The crowd sang along, and Rob strutted across the stage in the most epic fringe jacket I have ever seen! Now the bar is set even higher for the next show, what can he do to pass this next time?

Korn

While they were setting up the stage for Korn, they started soundchecking the drums.  When the drumstick hit, it made our chests hurt, and we knew this was going to be a great set.

While we waited for the show to begin, we noticed the screen showed a date of 10.21.16.  We feverishly searched to find out what we were looking out before they hit the stage.  A new album is on the way! Then the lights went out, and in walked the members of Korn.

An American Nu-metal band from California, these guys formed in 1993 and haven’t looked back.  Members Jonathan David, James “Munky” Shaffer, Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, Brian “Head” Welch and Ray Luzier have made some awesome metal music to date, so we were thrilled with the promise of new music, and then they played a new song which turned the excitement level up a notch.

Korn played the crowd favorites as well as songs many of us didn’t know.  Every song was a headbanging masterpiece.  Jonathan sounded like his recordings, if not better. In between oxygen puffs to help his asthma and sips of Monster Energy drinks, you heard a talented veteran who loves what he does.  Fieldy would step to the front of the stage and play the bass lines that would also make your chest hurt because they were so heavy, while Head and Munky made their guitars scream.

There was not an immobile person at this show, everyone had a favorite that made them move, stomp, shake, jump or play air guitar.  Three bands plus incredible fans made for one unforgettable night!
