Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel
May 3, 2017

Alter Bridge’s tour in support of 2016’s The Last Hero rolls on, and makes its way back to New England, this time giving Rhode Island a great show at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel. Supporting them on this run are In Flames and Devour the Day.

Devour the Day

Devour the Day singer Blake Allison

Touring in support of their 2016 album, S.O.A.R., Tennessee based Devour the Day kicked off the show. They put a lot of energy into their performance, and put on a really great show, however their performance was plagued with audio difficulties. The band was almost non-existent in the PA, with singer Blake Allison’s microphone not working for the first couple of songs.

This struggle just got them fired up though, and I think in the end, made their performance even better.

In Flames

In Flames vocalist Anders Fridén

In Flames never disappoints live. The technical difficulties that plagued Devour the Day were all gone now. From the moment In Flames hit the stage, they had the crowd captured. Last year saw the release of their 12th studio album, Battles, which was well represented. The one criticism I’d have for the set, which historically has been a criticism of In Flames, is they tend to focus on their newer material. Don’t get me wrong, it was a great show, but if you wanted to hear anything off of Clayman or earlier, you were out of luck. Favorites like “Cloud Connected” and “Take this Life” were there, so like I said, it was a great show.

Alter Bridge

Alter Bridge continues to show why they are one of the best touring rock bands out there. If you saw the show in Boston in February, you’ll find the setlist was fairly similar tonight, but these four guys put on a tight show. With a huge amount of talent showcased between them, the power coming from the stage is undeniable. The moment they hit the stage with “The Writing on the Wall,” the writing really is on the wall for what kind of show we’re going to hear tonight. “Isolation” and “Rise Today” were other highlights from the set, but always unforgettable is the dueling solos that Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy trade off with each other.

Alter Bridge have been touring constantly… This is the fourth time in the last year I’ve caught them on a bill, so if you haven’t caught them yet, you are sure to see them soon!
