Spring Fling 2016
Cage the Elephant
Silversun Pickups

April 1, 2016

Cage the Elephant brought their 3-week Spring Fling tour to a close with the final date in Providence. Supporting them on this run were Silversun Pickups, Foals and Bear Hands.

Bear Hands

Kicking off the night was Brooklyn-based indie band, Bear Hands. The band’s sound is very experimental, and multiple members changed instruments throughout the set, blending guitars, keyboards and samples to create their sound. Though a short set, they got the crowd fired up for the rest of the night.

Foals

The night rolled on with British band Foals. During the early portion of their set, the songs had a lot of space and were very artsy, while the last few songs of the set had more of a driving rock sound to them. Foals sounded like a modern, indie version of U2 mixed with Peter Gabriel. The energy built up in their final songs, and as they reached the end of “What Went Down,” lead singer Yannis Philippakis removed his guitar, and stage dived into the crowd.

Silversun Pickups

The crowd roared when Silversun Pickps took the stage. They’ve often been compared to Smashing Pumpkins, and that 90’s alternative sound is definitely a major influence on them. Their fourth album, Better Nature, was released in September, and it was well represented here, making up about half of the setlist. There were plenty of fan favorites to be found, though, with the biggest reactions to “Lazy Eye,” which ended the set, and “Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance),” which featured lead vocals from bass player Nikki Monninger.

Setlist

Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)

Panic Switch
Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)

Cage the Elephant

While the other bands had nice crowd reactions, it was clear that Cage the Elephant was the band everyone was here to see. From the moment they took the stage, lead singer Matthew Shultz had complete control of the crowd. As he ran across the stage, he often invoked images in my head of Mick Jagger. Cage the Elephant also released their fourth album, Tell Me I’M Pretty, in the last few months, and six of the tracks off it were played tonight. Hits like “In One Ear” and “Ain’t no Rest for the Wicked” are what the crowd really came to hear though, and they weren’t disappointed.

This was the final night of the tour, so as Cage reached their encore, everybody was ready to party. The members of Silversun Pickups could be spotted at the front of the stage singing along during “Cigarette Daydreams,” and before they started “Shake Me Down,” Shultz pulled Silversun Pickups singer Brian Aubert on stage to sing with him. For the final cut of the night, “Teeth,” they invited the members of all the other bands on stage to rock out one final time, as the Spring Fling came to a close.
